BREAKAS BEACH RESORT & VILLAS
Hi Rachel,
We had a fabulous time. Didn't want to return!!! Breaka's was great. Nice room – easy access to beach, pool and dining. Snorkelling off the beach was fantastic, but unfortunately there were no waves. Buses stop regularly outside the Resort so we had no worries getting into "town" when we wanted. The staff were very friendly (as we find in all of the Pacific Islands that we have been to). Bit disconcerting to find quite a few males have the name "Colleen" though!!! We thoroughly enjoyed the Coongoola Cruise to Moso Island and Tranquility Island to see the Hawksbill Turtle Rookery and the over-stimulating snorkeling off the reef. We also took the Around Island Tour which was also totally worth it. Nambawan (Number 1) Internet and Café where we had a food voucher was a great find. Good food, great location and on Sunday nights free open air movies!!!!
We met the new Chef at Breaka's, Dean and he suggested we leave the board and one suitcase in his office while we sojourned to Tanna which in hindsight was a great idea. The lady at Air Vanuatu also suggested it would be a good idea to leave the board behind as she was concerned that it may get damaged in the plane flight – so we heeded the advice and we didn't have time to even think of surf anyway. Tanna was the best! White Grass is very quiet and basic but has just what you need. A short walk off the jetty which drops down 20m and the most amazing fish and marine life aplenty (including sea snakes!). Near White Grass also boasts Blue Holes 1 and 2 for more snorkeling. We saw more marine life on Tanna than in Port Vila and that includes the well known Hideaway Resort.
We enjoyed the Waterfall and Black Sandy Beach Tour the morning before we left which was unreal. A group of local children joined us which made the day even more enjoyable. The "road" to the waterfall is quite bumpy and then the walk "down" to the waterfall is precarious but worth it all once you arrive at the waterfall. The immense pressure from the falling water makes it hard to get a photo but somehow we did! A picnic lunch beside the black sandy beach watching the local kids having fun topped off the morning. Then that afternoon we were booked to take the Volcano tour (talk about packing it all in!). It's a long afternoon/night but goes quickly as there's so much to see. More bumpy roads and light rain but lots of opportunities to take photos from a distance of the volcano. On the way there we stopped for a group of locals to sing some welcoming songs to us which was just magic. Some of the local children presented us with flowers. It was a very emotional pitstop. Once at the base of the volcano you realize just where you are. It's a bit of a hike up the mountain but it's when you turn and walk along the rim that the adrenalin really kicks in followed by the first loud explosion! We kept reminding ourselves of just where we were!
When the volcano gets angry it makes a loud noise and spits orange firey rocks into the air and you hear and see them land on the inner rim. How many photos can one take of an active volcano? The tour stays until night time to get the orange glow – which is a bit hairy – torches are provided – although I had my own – but it was a fantastic way to end our journey on Tanna. Again the food and the people were accommodating and we couldn't have asked for more.
As our flight home was the next day we actually returned home with sore thighs from all of the trekking up and down waterfalls and volcanoes! But what a way to go! Our return day stay at Breaka's was so welcoming with hugs from the staff on our return. Even the Manager asked us how our trip went. It was great to just have that day to chill and we appreciate that fact now.
If you haven't gone to sleep by now, that's our holiday in a nutshell, and by the way the Weddings we originally went there to attend were also wonderful. Very romantic and the Waterfront Bar and Grill where we had our reception meal was great and a fantastic reggae band performed as it was New Year.
Hope some of this helps with future trips.
