Your Solomon hosts
Kagata Village stay is a newly established surfing holiday destination where you will experience the real and typical culture of village living, interacting and meeting new friends within smaller local families who live in this remote part of Solomon Islands and at the same time surf the most crowd free and untouched waves of the islands. Enjoy warm Melanesian hospitality while experiencing the adventure of this remote part of the Pacific.

Kagata Surfing Frens was established out of surfing after it was initiated just two seasons ago by local tourism operator, Mr Laurie Leketo. Laurie invests in the project, along with the local community to enhance their livelihood. It is a pilot project that emerges in the western remote part of Santa Isabel which is still left untouched, and will slowly grow to other remote parts of the Solomon Islands.

"By staying with the locals your valuable dollar goes back into the local tribes, helping our isolated communities with much needed essentials like
food, medicine, education, and housing."

Tourism Operator, Laurie Leketo
Age 26, BA in Tourism and Hospitality, USP, Suva, Fiji.

Kagata Surfing Frens is 100% locally owned, which gives the opportunity for most local people to participate directly and indirectly in the operation.

Kagata Village Stay (in Santa Isabel Province)

This is not a resort. It is a real Solomon village stay. Accommodation is a comfortable western style bungalow, which includes bedrooms (3), living/dining, and the toilet/bathroom supported by a rain water tank (6000litres). Provided are mosquito nets, 6 inch mattresses, pillows, bed sheets etc. There is a solar power system, (12 volts) with limited 240 v through an inverter (for ipod/camera). For cool drinks, ice cubes we buy it from Kia which we have a esky available for storage. Recently we also completed a traditional dormitory type bungalow with 4 beds.

Food

Food Most food is local and organic, including fresh seafood, seasonal fruits and edible local delicacies.

Customary Land

90% of land in Solomon Islands is classified as customary land. This means
when out of the main town areas, there will be what known as "kastom" fees;
these are payable to one of the family owners of the land you are visiting.
These are normally negligible when visiting tourist places/attractions, but
something to be aware of.

Dress code

Modest dress is encouraged and light cotton recommended all year around.
Bikinis should be reserved for swimming in the sea/rivers.

When visiting villages, women should ensure their attire covers below their
knees, as most local women do not wear shorts or pants. Modesty is more an
act of courtesy by visitors, especially out of Honiara in the rural villages
or when bushwalking.
Village centre

Our only closest centre for shopping, medical and communication using mobile
(Telstra) is in Kia, our biggest village in Isabel province in which houses
are built on silts (in water). Kia is a small commercial rural centre that
provides basic rural support and services to our communities. This is where
most of our extended families live, as well as our head chief (chiefly
system) responsible for our overall affairs.

Our Mission is to provide the best achievable surfing experience with our
uncrowned waves, village stay lifestyle, taste of our unique local cuisine
and culture, and creating an unforgettable life changing experience in the
Solomon Islands.

Where are we?

We are located in Santa Isabel province, one of the most unvisited islands in Solomon Islands. Kagata Surfing Frens is also home to numerous plants and animals that are endemic to the islands.

For those arriving from other parts of the South Pacific, the Solomon Islands are a bit of a shock. Unlike Fiji or French Polynesia, this remote corner of Melanesia sees very few tourists, and as a result, gives travelers
the opportunity to experience real Pacific Island culture and history without the presence of mass tourism.

The Native people of Santa Isabel province originated from Bugotu (orginal people of Isabel Province). However, Isabel was divided into regions which include Bugotu, Gao, Maringe and Kia (Zabana). The provincial headquaters are in Buala.
